Hi Vance,
Its great to see you back here. It was very hard on us, Stan developed an aggresive bone cancer in his jaw, the vet gave him about four weeks to live an as he was in much pain I had him put down. I guess we are still getting over it, especially me as he was my shadow 24/7. His favorite past time was to spend the day in the bush with me, and that was most days. laugh

RMD is IMO the perfect knife! Not to big and not to small but can handle just about anything you throw at it! i have owned more RMD's than any other knife!
Posted by: Drumrboy

Re: Swamp Rat Picture Thread - 06/08/12 04:41 PM

It's a bit of a variation. RMD with green and black G10, convexed, with a different blade shape. VERY sharp!
Obviously, it's a bit lighter than a standard RMD. But it feels very good and solid.
Posted by: infocus2006

Re: Swamp Rat Picture Thread - 06/08/12 05:08 PM

I like it DB! The G10 looks good on it!
Posted by: Drumrboy

Re: Swamp Rat Picture Thread - 06/08/12 05:13 PM

Whoever sharpened it did a great job. Plus, I dig the shape of the blade on this.
Posted by: infocus2006

Re: Swamp Rat Picture Thread - 06/08/12 05:33 PM

That stuff makes great stovewood. Used to cook on it as well as heat the place up in winter.
Come Fall, my blades will be busy. Right now it is chainsaw, canthook, maul, wedges and such.
Getting too hot for that work, but I am behind schedule on my 4 cord for the winter.

Re: Swamp Rat Picture Thread - 06/10/12 03:02 PM

I burned 4 cord last winter and not once did we use our central heat! We have a Buck Stove insert in our fireplace with a low E blower! It will do 4200 SQ ft on high! We ran it on low all winter and our electric bill was almost $300 less than the winter before!

The only "central heat" I have is a Heatilator fireplace. Convection moves the air (no blower).

Those are great! I know a guy that has one!

Re: Swamp Rat Picture Thread - 06/10/12 04:58 PM

Well, in my case I have a vaulted ceiling in the greatroom, so I need a ceiling fan to move the hot air down, but it maintains temps between 66 and 76 all winter in the house, with temps in the 20's outside. Light a fire around Thanksgiving and it goes out around Easter. I do bank it every night so it never (or rarely) goes out.

Got two Montana as well, but I need to supplement the heat from one with the other. Temps there hover around -20 for about 3 months, but the walls there are 18" thick and ceiling and floor are well insulated.

Lol. laugh

Here's a nice combo. The Chopweiler and the Howler, though I do have a HRLM that does still fit that sheath with the Chopweiler.
I always had visions of using a combo like that on my saddle. Problem is I've seemed to given up the horses in my old age. laugh

As for colors and such, it is either what catches my eye, what's in stock when I inquire, what's offered as an LE, or what I can score at a show. Less often do I choose exactly a specific color scheme and hunt for it or order it.

My new sheath from my new friend! This is hands down the best fitting sheath i have ever owned! It fits my Chopweiler like a latex glove! I cannot believe this guy doesn't make these for a living! He has a gift when it comes to leather IMO. Thanks again buddy... i love this sheath almost as much as the blade it was made for!

Thanks for not only getting me back into a chopweiler but for letting me have the ratweiler as well. You have first dibs on it if I ever decide to part with it. I hope you enjoy the sheath as much as I enjoyed making it for you. I can't wait to make a sheath for the Ratweiler it's going to be cool.

I wish i could have got a pic of the Chinook Helicopter dumping water right beside us Friday. Saturday we were working back in the woods on a blind line and a fire was creeping up on us. It got about 20ft from my bucket when a low flying Chinook dropped 1200 gallons of water and it missed the fire and soaked my bucket and all 5 of us beside the truck! I had about 2ft of standing water inside my actual bucket! The Chinook's were hoovering about 40ft above us and it felt like a wave slamming us.

It would be sweeter than candy if it were INFI. It's pretty darn nice as is, but gotta keep it coated or force patina to prevent potential rust. All my INFI is more stain-resistant.

Had words with a young fella a few months back and he decided to take me on-
So I said: You cannot win this one young fella.
He said: Why not?
I said: If you win, you whupped an old man; If I win you got whupped by an old man- you lose either way.

That pretty much ended it... wink

I wanted the top ground down to be more like the M series as opposed to some of the flat top R6's I've seen.

That sheath is double-layer .060 Kydex for the full body of the sheath with a third layer near the top. Intent was to make a hard-use (even in cold weather) combat style sheath suitable for drop-leg carry. It is ambidexterous, with a large flange Chicago screw (or blind-nut) imbedded between layers, with the shank of the blind-nut serving as a hinge-point. I have carried it in every imaginable position (note there is also an inverted-carry attachment point near the tip/spine).

There is Kevlar between the first and second layers, and that sheath will support my 240 lbs when standing in the middle of the sheath (empty) at -20F without cracking. The concept was carry options while being as indestructable as possible. It is heavy for a sheath, but not so much so that it adds measurably to the already heavy SH/e.

I am the maker.

Re: Swamp Rat Picture Thread - 02/05/13 08:21 PM

Thanks, fellas...
Many years ago I collaborated with Andrew Lynch (Busse Forum) on a similar sheath for my BM/e. He built it, I supplied materials and suggestions. I am still using that sheath as well, but it is pure pancake and I sorta like folded better, so I came up with this for my SH/e and went with pure harness leather for my NO/e. Now I am working on hybrids- Kydex/leather and a few other materials. It is a good hobby to retreat into when I get under foot at home. smile

WOW! Great pictures, Carl.

Is that bottom one an NO-e or a BA-e? Just looks short for the NO.

That 30-30 would be a flame thrower. laugh My 16 inch Trapper blows a fair flame so I cam imagine that one in the dark. laugh

Edited to add:

My mistake, I just took alook at them together here. laugh

With factory ammo, it is a flame thrower alright. Hand loads do much better.

I agree, the boys and I skined and butchered a bullock one time with the NO-e, we had been collecting rock and found him out there with a dropped hip. I always carried the NO in the glove box on the rock truck. It was my very first Busse, the the Active Duty came along after that, still one of my favorites.

Re: Swamp Rat Picture Thread - 02/15/13 05:57 AM

Great pics guys ! Thought I might join in the fun. Still can't find my camera so I hope these phone pics are OK:

Some new INFI:

A bit of old and new - the FSH with the NMFSHLE, NMFSHCG and NMFSHCGDC...whooh...too many letters !

The NMFSH with 2 Rodent 3s and PPKS Holstex pants. Jared (Invinoveritas1911) from PPKS (Paw Paws Knife Shop) made the sheaths and was a pleasure to deal with and I hope to deal with him again. He makes a great product. I will be taking more pics of his stuff soon.....
My new Custom MBC arrived, too. White Giraffe bone and red liners. Love the Hollow Grind !! Thanks Garth !! I was surprised that it is roughly the same OAL as the Rodent 3 !

I just finished my wrapping my two Wardens and they turned out pretty good for my first attempt at paracord anything. I'll get pics up soon.

Since I compared the SAR3 to the Rodent 3, I thought I better take some pics, just to show the similarities and differences:

Both are very similar - the SAR3 is about 1/3 of an inch longer - but only at the handle - and no little hump.

Re: Swamp Rat Picture Thread - 03/03/13 01:14 AM

OK - so only a couple of them are molded - but while I had some out I wanted to show off his inlay work, as well. The Black on the left is Emu Toe dyed black - the others are snake skin. The black one is actually for an RMDxLE - but they were kind of buried under some stuff so I grabbed an RMD - you can never have too many !
I tried to get some lighting to emphasize the MBC and MUK. These 2 are molded and are perfect. The MUK sheath was so well molded that the grooves and hole matched perfectly when I inserted it.

Hope that helps !

Yep, I believe it's Blade mag. I have been gifted this and other subscriptions so I pay little attention to covers, etc. it's the most-recent issue. I flipped thru it, browsing the images and saw this multi-page Busse(kin) advertisement.

I picked this Swamp Rat up recently on a sale (pic link above - not sure how to post direct as new to forum). I got my 1st SR last week (in fact two of them) The 1st is a Rodent 6 (love it) The other is this and I'm not sure what model it is?
7 inch blade
1/4 thick
crusher point on pommel
Like new condition - and razor sharp.

Can't decide if I want to keep or trade or sell for another SR product.

Can anyone help on model etc.?

Excellent idea.

So is this one now bound for an auction site since I helped identify it?
Posted by: Drumrboy

Re: Swamp Rat Picture Thread - 05/08/13 09:26 PM

Clearly a fake. Cheaper to ship it to me than Elof, since I'm in the states and he is one. Of our Aussie brethren.

And since it is a pic thread....

By the way, welcome to the Swamp!
Posted by: husker red

Re: Swamp Rat Picture Thread - 05/08/13 10:10 PM

smile At this point its staying in my collection. Great feel - great shape - nice size. Thanks for the help identifying. I picked up this and my R6 as 1st Rats in what will be others to come.
If it goes to auction someday - I will post it but for now into the collection it goes - unless someone would "happen" to give me irresistible offer - but I really like everything about it.

It's the CG (Combat Grade) version of the Tali Whacker. My TWLE is shown a few posts before the muddy one. At Blade they were difficult to get but offered in more colors than were expected to include Muddy, Sage and Zombie Green.

The blade is 6" instead of 5 1/4". It's got a satin finish and the full guard. There my be more but that is the extent of knowledge on it.

Edit: And black paper micarta handles instead of canvas.

Slight blade length difference, thickness, RMDx has a convex grind R6 has a saber grind. R6 night have slightly wider blade.

Re: Swamp Rat Picture Thread - 09/05/13 02:40 AM

Eli... If you run across one for sale JUMP on it FAST!!! It wont last long. And its worth what ever they ask for it...

But If I see it first Im going to JUMP all over it LMAO... even if i had to sell all my non busse-kin knives to get it LMAO

I was truly excited about the Ratweiler coming back out... Im still excited, but now i believe I will like the choppy more. mostly because of the handle. The rodent series didnt go so well with me, not sure how the Ratweiler will do but the choppy could not be any more perfect.

Im still going to have the ratweiler, I better LMAO its going to be tatted on my arm. But I dont think any knife will ever top the choppy to me.

Thanks bud, that choppy look a like and the other one with the bocote wood handles is 3V heat treated with Dan Keffelers heat treating protocols to 60HRC by PHT.

The larger one is made as another competition cutter. But thinner and lighter as a practice/learning cutter.

The smaller one i basically drew up a chopweiler with no choil and a 6" blade that about .22" thick. That one will most likely be getting different handles later and an acid Stonewash treatment.

Guess I need to post this one here on the Swamp. This would be as close to a Brotherhood blade as I have right now since its the only Rat I currently own. It will at some point be sent to the Swamp for red liners. As it was a gift I don't feel right having it engraved.

Thanks for all the compliments, like I said my RMD is actually at the swamp impatiently waiting for me to complete payment. As soon as possible he'll be on his way home to the etchant and stripper himself. After seeing so many of WW's two-tone jobs I'm tempted to leave the rearward saber coated, or maybe just the spine... Who knows. Appreciate it again guys, I look forward to sharing more soon!

Caldwell Bush Model #1, Ka-bar Becker BK2 signed/engraved by Ethan Becker, and Swamp Rat DMD Brotherhood edition.

Re: Swamp Rat Picture Thread - 12/13/14 09:13 PM

They will do in a pinch smile

-carl

Re: Swamp Rat Picture Thread - 12/14/14 12:38 PM

The RMD wins in ergonomics!

The handle on the Caldwell has great contouring but the width and thickness of it makes it a little less hand friendly. Still a great handle, just not AS great of a handle as the RMD.

Plus the choil on the RMD makes it even more convenient for my uses.

The Caldwell may very well end up getting sold or traded. I do like it... I just dont LOVE it.

The BK2 holds sentimental value, as Ethan Becker the designer of the knife, personally engraved his name in it and mailed it to me a couple years ago. Its never been used and wont be.

One of the handle bolts is missing in the picture, i didnt notice that until after taking the photo, but i already put the bolt back in there. I "borrowed" it a while back for another knife and forgot about it LOL

Re: Swamp Rat Picture Thread - 12/14/14 01:10 PM

1/4" 154CM

Re: Swamp Rat Picture Thread - 12/14/14 03:26 PM

That BK-2 is a keeper for sure.

-carl

Re: Swamp Rat Picture Thread - 12/14/14 03:38 PM

interesting steel and thickness choice

how does it cut compared to the bk2 and RMD?
Posted by: worldwood

Re: Swamp Rat Picture Thread - 12/14/14 04:29 PM

The thickness is indeed interesting. Dont see many SS knives this thick. I love 154CM though, its a great steel.

I havent used the Caldwell. I got it in unused condition and havent decided if ill be keeping it yet. So im not going to scratch it all up unless i decide to keep it.

But being FFG im sure it will slice better than the BK2. And being 1/4" thick might give it more weight and forward momentum than the RMD.. SO it "MAY" out perform the RMD in chopping and batoning. The RMD being saber grind will help to split wood, but still the saber grind on the RMD is still thinner than the top of the Caldwell. So batoning would be an interesting comparison. I have used lots of BK2s just not this specific one, and they make decent camp knives for when you want to use a smaller bladed knife to chop and baton with, but they arent the best slicers due to their thickness and saber grind.

All that being said this is just a hypothesis. As i havent used the Caldwell. I like the blade profile and geometry quite a bit, but i have medium sized hands and the handle is a bit thicker/wider than i prefer. It has great contouring but that doesnt help enough to offset the width of the handle for me.

Posted by: Drumrboy

Re: Swamp Rat Picture Thread - 05/27/15 03:21 PM

That RMD is a pretty nice one.

FFG, OD and black G10, and a unique blade shape. A bit of a Bowie style with some swayback to it. In person, it looks even better than the pictures. There may be others out there, but this is the only one exactly like it that I've seen.

This RMD is a bit thinner than a standard RMD as well. Thin and sharp!

Re: Swamp Rat Picture Thread - 05/28/15 08:14 PM

I've liked a few of the variants over the years...one with an upsweep comes to mind...and the bowies. But, I think yours is the best looking! Where did you score it?

Thanks much RPN. I already emailed Trissy about a second one in tan canvas, and she said she had to wait to talk to the guys after Blade to see if there were more blanks left of the RT. I sure hope there are a few more.

ETA: That Sprig does look nice!

Re: Swamp Rat Picture Thread - 06/06/15 10:03 AM

I had thought a bit about requesting a modded RT with a Meaner Street profile.

But...I do have my Bandicoot anyway. May still go for a Leaner Meaner Street at some point.

I was about to do a pre-order on the Sprig but then googled some in hand shots and wonder if it may be a little small/thin in the handle for me.

I bet there will be some cool RT variants at Blade!
