I started learning this stuff at aged 5 years (Before that it was all "play in the woods"). My kid started learning at 3. She is more woodsman than most men I know (present company excepted).
I recon that if you can't spend a week out alone by the time you are 10, parental failure is a likely cause.....

My dad "played a trick on me" when I was 11. We went out camping on a weekend which was very common for us and he told me was going to get some water from a stream near by and didnt come back that night. Came back the next day to find me with the fire still going, tent put up, and enough fire wood to keep the fire burning for at least 12 more hours. I was also asleep with a map and notepad next to me with a plan on how to find my dad.

The look of pride on his face at that moment was one I rarely saw on my fathers face, and what he said still makes me smile to this day "Ill make a man out of you yet boy."

Dad tought me woodcraft as well as my uncles and grandfather. I spent more time in the woods than anywhere else growing up. I learned a lot of stuff just spending time in the woods. You can learn alot by watching and listening.

Very true!

Unfortunately most 'skills' presented to kids are not really worth having those days...
MB, you were lucky to grow up between men who respected the land!

Nice to finally have a day off to rest a bit and get caught up on work that I've been putting off.
