Agreed. Hunting should be about hunting and teaching about teaching. Attempting both dilutes both and may accomplish neither smile

How does it work there?

I've noticed bow hunting, black powder hunting and modern rifles. Do you have different seasons? or is it a choice of the hunter. Here some like bow hunting in preference to rifles, but it comes down to preference.

I've wondered about it for a while now.

Ian-
There are seasons, and they differ by state.
In most, bow season predates rifle and there is some overlap.
In some, black powder and bow run together, rifle to follow.
In still others all run concurrent- hunters choice.

Bow hunters tend to prefer their season apart from rifle (incl. black powder) because they tend to spend time on a stalk to get close and would prefer to avoid getting shot (some folks just shoot at movement wink ).

Ian, often there are benefits to the bow seasons and short-range weapons seasons (black powder, shotgun, bow or some handguns here) over the rifle seasons. For example, the bow seasons for elk run during their rutting season (most of September) and it is much easier to call one into range. Rifle season here is later and they have been hunted for about six weeks and are more wary and out of the rut mostly. Benefits to each, but as Carl said different state to state.

Also, you are mostly free to choose which season you prefer to hunt although you may need the proper certifications or permits such as bow hunter certification which is beyond the hunter's education certification.

Finally got to put a few days together and hit the woods for a deer hunt. Drew a good muledeer buck tag a few hours north in the Salmon and Snake River country.

A nice whitetail buck bedded at 736 yards. Dang, my tag's good for muledeer only, no stalk forthcoming on this one. A bit hard to see in this pic, his head is showing above the grass, facing left. Difficult to get a good pic on a cell phone through a spotting scope at such range, sorry!

Here he is standing

Thanks for the info guys, we have nothing structured like that here at all. No bow seasons, in fact the only seasons here are duck season.

I just love those pics, HK. I imagine the appropriate clothing is needed going by the snow on the ground. grin: Great country too.

btw, what is the devil's club! ?
