Hi guys, I'd love your opinions on which would be more suited for backpacking and overall woods use.

My BATAC LE was just a little small for processing wood, so the new Ratweiler really appeals to me. However I've always wanted the KDSH as it seems really useful to choke up on for fine tasks as well as for processing wood (and fun to throw, lets be honest). Would I be sacrificing something practical by going with one vs the other? I just can't come to a conclusion.

Wall,

This is the kind of place that questions like that usually end up with one answer: BOTH!

Ratweiler has been around for a good few years and some folks will swear by it, they'd take one as their main camp blade, SHTF blade...
And the new incarnation has more comfortable handles.

KDSH, there are folks who love them for the fun factor (throwing, destroying shyte) and even prize them for camp duties. There are others that think it's just too light for processing wood.

Personally, I've had some fun times with Ratweiler, and can say 'just do it!'. Unfortunately I can't bring KDSH into Australia because of the stupid import regulations, but I've used my Crash Rat a bit an that was fun too...

So I'd say... get 'em both wink

Hello there Riley. Welcome to the forum.

If you have to prioritize, then definitely get the Ratweiler while it's being offered. It's not going to be around forever and the KDSH is a standard offering on the site (for now). Also, the KDSH comes up more frequently on the secondary market, so it would be much easier to pick up a Ratweiler and then add a KDSH.

But if you've got the means, get them both wink

Thanks for the welcome!

I figured that the answer of both was coming my way smile but I appreciate the replies nonetheless!

Would it be fair to assume that the Ratweiler would be more useful for processing wood as it can be batoned? Since its been said that the KDSH may be considered a bit light?

I'd get the ratweiler. The KDSH is more of a toy tool.

For processing wood the Ratweiler is the way to go.

Agree with most of the advice, GET BOTH!!! grin

But the Ratweiler is the better overall tool of the two. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my MO KDSH, but the Ratweiler is a better cutting tool that can also chop and baton. The cutting usefulness of the KDSH is limited, but it is definitely the better chopper/demolitions tool of the two though.
