One of the calves is a promising bull. You just might be right ...otherwise it is pure cowdung- a final spewing of the cud.

lol. I've had a lifetime of getting covered in it, I must say it never bothered me too much, a shower and fresh clothes always took care of it.
In fact I'd rather wash that off than grease and diesel engine oil. grin

It didn't help me any. grin

when spending a few weeks in cattle camps, hygiene becomes difficult, so washing up in a river or troughs around the dry areas aren't the best of places for cleanliness.

The old cook we had (chilby) only tubed when it rained and he was caught out in it.
I might add it didn't rain too often in the dry season and the camps stopped for the wet season. grin

Interesting, we have a lot of cross breeds here in Australia nowadays, particularly since the seventies.
I used an Angus bull on first calving heafas, they have a smaller calf and less problems when calving first time.

The Angus x Hereford cross makes a great table meat, I usually fattened one up with grain (Barley) for a killer.

This of course was in the NSW closer properties I managed, Outback and in the Gulf country were mainly Santa Gertrudis, also Brahman and Zebu bulls were sprinkled around the stations.
Most our our beef from that country was exported, a lot to the USA. Hamburger trade I think.

The big Santa's are more able to travel vast distances between water and feed. Also more tick resistant.

Apart from Horses and Dogs, cattle are my next love. grin

Santa Gertrudis

An interesting read, the Santa's were originally bred at the King Ranch, USA. I didn't know that.
