To all who venture out I urge the following:
Take everything you think you will need to make a comfortable trip.
While there, do without one or more of the things you brought.
Improvise solutions to what the "missing" component(s) raise as issues.
If you cannot, it is still there to enable you. But if you can you are teaching yourself the beginnings of survival. You are learning how to think out of the box.

Good idea Carl. I did that one camp out--left my eating utensils to the side. Made a functional spoon with my knife that served the duration.

I also like to practice making things in the backyard as time allows--fishhooks, fires, shelters, etc. I can't get out in the woods too often to go camping these days. Practice what you can when you can where you can and if the need arises, you've got the skills you need smile

Amen to that. Simple things like making a fire with a ferrocium rod or flint and steel or bow-drill and the like so you can ger-er-done first time every time make a big difference.

Making cordage can also be done at home, as can making a bark pot for boiling water. All take practice, but persistence pays off.

There is just one other minor thing to be added here for those few who take this seriously:

Once you master something, say firestarting as you would have to do it in an emergency- put your good hand behind your back and start a fire...

I can, with substantial experience, tell you that real survival emergencies find you alone, injured, perhaps barely conscious, half frozen, barely able to focus and without that ferrocium rod- with fire esssntial to your continued existence.

It is therefore imperative that you be able to do what needs to be done with either hand. It is also important that you be able to say: Don't ask if I can start a fire, ask instead how many ways I can start a fire. And, this can be learned at home.

It took more mistakes to get me wise than the average bear. Hard lessons most, and I would rather learn the easy way.

I now carry a blastmatch because it can be used one-handed. But I learned that by nearly freezing to death after falling through a snow-bridge into an ice-covered stream and being carried downstream under the ice. Couldn't break the ice, so had to work my way upstream to the hole I made going in. This at 10,500 feet in late fall with a storm coming.

Try building a fire with uncontrollable shaking. All gear soaked through (useless down bag and coat- all soaked).

Lessons learned: No down, only synthetics, more cotton balls soaked in Vaseline, and a blastmatch for emergencies.

Oh- and don't cross streams on uncertain snow bridges- even an 8' walking stick did not find the weak spot.
